Ways to boost your metabolism
- Eat plenty of protein. Eating food can increase your metabolism for a couple of hours. This is called the thermic effect of food (TEF). Protein causes the largest rise in TEF
- Lift weights. Muscle is more metabolically active than fat, and building muscle can help increase your metabolism This means you will burn more calories each day, even at rest
- Avoid crash dieting at all cost. When we crash diet you run the risk of metabolising muscle too. This in turn can effect metabolism.
- Stand more. Sitting for a long time burns few calories and is bad for your health. Try to stand up regularly.
- Move more. Moving increases your daily NEAT. Non-exercise activity thermogenesis (NEAT) is the energy expended for everything we do that is not sleeping, eating or sports-like exercise.
- Sleep well. Lack of sleep can decrease the number of calories you burn, change the way you process sugar and disrupt your appetite-regulating hormones.
