The importance of muscle tissue

1) Mobility. The muscular system’s main function is to allow movement. When muscles contract, they contribute to movement.

2) Stability. Muscle tendons stretch over joints and contribute to joint stability. Muscles like the abdomen stabilise the lower back and pelvis

3) Posture. Skeletal muscles help keep the body in the correct position when someone is sitting or standing.

4) Bodily functions. For example the heart is a muscle that pumps blood throughout the body. Breathing involves the use of the diaphragm muscle.

5) Metabolism. Increasing your muscle mass increases your metabolism

6) Heat production. All types of muscle produce heat, but because of the large amount of skeletal muscle present in the body, skeletal muscle contributes most greatly to heat production.
