When on your adventure abroad or an overseas work trip, it can feel as though your entire food and fitness routine is thrown into chaos.

This leads most people to fall into the trap of gaining those extra few kilos, which is the last thing you want to deal with when you get home. So to help you keep fit and healthy while you’re away, we’ve put a little list together of our super easy to follow top tips.

Explore a City by Foot

Walking is the best way to see a city, as it allows you to really take in all your new surroundings — but even better, it keeps you fit! You will find that you’re easily able to hit the 10,000 step daily recommendation for weight loss, venturing between various landmarks and restaurants. That way you don’t have to feel too guilty when you sit down to that massive bowl of creamy pasta with a glass of red wine for dinner. Just make sure to always check how safe the area you are walking around is.

Healthy Snacking

Now while you’re having an amazing time discovering this new city, always remember to pack a snack or two for in-between meal times. My first suggestion for a healthy snack is a piece of fresh fruit. Fruit provides the body with a variety of nutrients, and gives you a burst of energy from all of the natural sugars. Secondly, a little packet of nuts is a great on-the-go snack, especially when combined with dried fruit and seeds. Nuts are high in protein and are packed full of unsaturated fats — which will keep you sustained for longer. The other goal of snacking throughout the day is to reduce the chances of over-ordering and over-eating during meal times.

Keep Hydrated

Drinking an adequate amount of water is one of the major things that people forget to do whilst overseas. Especially if you’re moving into a warmer climate and exercising a lot, it is essential that you meet your body’s requirements. Without replenishing these stores, you’ll find you become a little dehydrated, which is commonly seen through feeling thirsty, fatigued, dizzy and faint, and your skin and lips can even start to feel dry. To avoid this, ensure that you always have a bottle of safe drinking water on you.

Monitor your Drinking

Now I know this is a tricky one, as we all get a little carried away when we are overseas. However, it is imperative that you responsibly consume alcohol. Sadly alcohol has no nutritional value, meaning that you are consuming these kilojoules without your body receiving any nutritional benefit — which can sadly lead to the famous ‘beer gut’. As well as this, if you are travelling in an unknown city, particularly if you’re alone, it is important that you are not so intoxicated that you are unable to keep your wits about you. If you do not drink responsibly, you are putting yourself and others in danger. But of course, a glass of wine or two and dinner won’t hurt — you can’t be too restrictive on your holiday after all.

Hopefully these four simple little tips will help you packing on that overseas weight, while still being able to enjoy all a city has to offer. The trick is to not get too carried away, and think about you future self and their health.
