Have a daily smoothie. Why? They taste awesome, are a great snack or meal (eg Breakfast, post workout, pre dinner, anytime), they are a convenient way of packing more vegetables and fruit in your diet. Do you know the importance of getting your greens in daily but just don't find them that appetising? What about trying a banana, berry, and spinach smoothie? It is a very convenient way of bumping up your five plus a day. One of our favourites is 200g mixed berries, 1 serve of spinach and a scoop of whey protein blended in a nutribullet with water. This ticks of 2 serves of fruit and 1 vegetable serve in one go with the addition of some protein. If you have a serve of vegetables with dinner and lunch you have had 5. Done, Easy!
Juice it. Juice some fresh fruit and vegetables to get an extra serve in. Or be lazy like me and just buy cold pressed juice. You can buy this in the supermarket http://www.homegrownjuice.co.nz it has zero additives. So if it says its Orange juice it 100% oranges and nothing else. They also have some great vegetable juices which are high in all the good stuff like vitamins and fibre. Because it is cold pressed juice without any additives it has a super short shelf life so once opened make sure you finish it in a few days.
Buy half fresh vegetables and half frozen. Do you hate eating vegetables that aren't quite as fresh as when you bought them? Us too! That's why we suggest buying half your vegetables fresh and half frozen. That way you run less risk of wasted food. Frozen vegetables are just as good as fresh vegetables and are ideal for things like stir frys. On a budget? There is absolutely nothing wrong with $2 mixed vegetables, they're a great addition to bulk meals up. Put them in soups, mince dishes, home made pasta and rice dishes. They really are a multi purpose vegetable.
Include fruit or vegetables in all your main meals. Add a banana to your cereal in the morning, some vegetables to your sandwich at lunch and have a side of vegetables with your meat and potatoes at dinner. 5+ serves have been consumed right there. Don't over complicate it, it's not hard but does require a bit of planning.
