Goal setting: What kind of pain do you want?

It's an odd question to ask but to often when looking at goals we focus on where we want to be or what we want to achieve without fully considering the sacrifices we will need to make to be able to achieve our goals. Let's take fitness as an example. Say you want to get fit and strong this year maybe lose some weight.

That's great, I love that goal. Let's consider the sacrifices or pain we might have to go through to get there. You work 40 hours a week, have a commute time, a busy family life. Sound familiar? Where in the schedule might exercise fit? Most likely early mornings or later evenings. So in this example we are most probably either sacrificing a bit of sleep time or a bit or leisure time at night. Are you going to have to deal with sore muscles? Most definitely. Will you be tired some days and not feel like doing it all the time 1000%. What about saying no to cake at work? That can be tough in the beginning too.

So what is the point of considering the pain or sacrifices required with goals? Going into any goal fully understanding the pain or sacrifices that need to be made better prepares you to be successful. You understand what is required and can put steps in place to make sure that you are successful. Does it get easier? Of course. But there is always going to be something we are sacrificing. It is about weighing up what's important to you.

It's one thing to think about what we could or would like to do. It is a totally different thing to accept the trade offs that can come with our goals.
